Roles in The Study of Music
Discuss the kind and degree of involvement that makes the best sense. Should you attend lessons, and if so, how often? Should you supervise or coach practice sessions, and, if so, how should you go about that? Communication with me to monitor progress and learn what you can do to be helpful will make the learning process even more successful.
Be sure to praise effort as well as accomplishment. Some do not progress as fast as others but in the long run, hard work will determine the final result. Try to express interest even if it the same song you have heard for a long time. Exhibit positive reinforcement. Encourage performance for other people whenever possible especially in a relaxed setting.
Schedule practice time for young students as regularly as you do for other extracurricular activities. Try to make the room free from distractions.
The experience of listening to music without the pressure of having to play the notes correctly can add greatly to an appreciation for music generally and lessons in particular. Attend concerts and play music at home.
